PAST MONTHLY NEWSLETTERS ARE ARCHIVED UNTIL AFTER THE MAY 2010 ELECTION.

DONALA WATER & SANITATION DISTRICT
MARCH 2010

    BOARD OF DIRECTORS ELECTION

As we went to press in mid-February there were 5 candidates declared for the 3 Board positions opening in May.  We will let you know in the April Newsletter who the candidates are.  Those desiring absentee ballots can obtain the application from our office.  We will announce how to do that in the April Newsletter, as well as the procedures for the mail ballot election.

SUMMER IRRIGATION RATIONING

As discussed in earlier town meetings and newsletters, the District is facing large water rights and infrastructure costs to secure a long-term water supply.  The less water our customers use, the less we have to spend to replace it.  Although rain helped us through last year’s irrigation season, we still need to conserve.  Therefore, the summer irrigation-rationing program will continue.  It will begin on Monday, May 31 and last until Tuesday, September 7.  Specifics will be published later, but the basic plan allows for odd number homes to water Monday, Wednesday and Friday, while even numbers water Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday.  Townhome and commercial accounts will be assigned their appropriate “water days”.  Irrigation times are from midnight to 9 a.m. and 6 p.m. to midnight on your assigned days.  For more information, check the District website at www.donalawater.org.

PART-TIME CONSERVATION MANAGER

Donala is considering hiring a part-time Environment/Conservation Manager. Duties will include landscape/xeriscape training for District constituents, including landscape design/architecture, managing the conservation plan, irrigation rationing, rebates, working with HOA’s and others to conserve water, and working environmental issues.  Master Gardner or Landscape Design experience is a must!  Salary;$16-$20 per hour, DOE.  Twenty hour week.  Benefits potentially available.  Please-qualified applicants only.  Contact the District at 488-3603.

SUMMER HIRES

The District will employ two or three summer hires again this summer. Applicants should be college students who are District residents and who are not afraid of manual labor.  Duties will include summer maintenance, landscaping, road repairs, painting, etc.  This is an excellent opportunity for a scientific minded student as well.   There will be some exposure to the chemical and biological processes of water and wastewater treatment.  Some laboratory work is available.  Salary is $12 per hour.  Application deadline is 9 April at the District office (15850 Holbein Drive).

PAINT/PESTICIDES DO NOT GO DOWN THE DRAIN

Arsenic and selenium are two of many contaminants that are devastating to aquatic life and not easily removable by a wastewater plant.  Neither are found in our water supply or our distribution system.  They can only get to the stream by coming from customer sewer systems.  The most common sources of arsenic and selenium are paint and pesticide products.  Please! help us protect the environment. Don’t pour paint, stain, pesticides, drugs, personal care products and any other potential contaminant down the drain!  If you need help getting rid of it, bring it to us – we will do it for you.

EMPTY HOUSE LEAKS

Plan to leave town for a while?  For Good?   Please do not turn off the heat if you do.  During the recent cold snaps, we responded to several leaks where the homeowner was either gone on vacation or had moved out with the house on the market, and the heat had been shut off.  We had hoped that real estate agents in the area would know better, but it seems many of them recently moved here from Southern California, and they do not understand how water freezes.  Even if the heat is on, when the water system is dormant in an empty house, pipes in the north wall and cold, minimally insulated parts of the house can freeze and burst.  Consider leaving a slight drip from a faucet in that area.  You might also want to turn the water off at the meter.  That will not stop a freeze, but it will limit the damage.

The next regular Board Meeting is rescheduled for Thursday, March 18, 2010 at 1:30 p.m.  If you plan on attending please call us at 488-3603.
